Why Do We Hide Our Flaws?
We wish the world to see us differently—less messier than we are—when we all know that each of us is a vulnerable human being living an imperfect life. So why is there this need to hide our flaws?
The Mask of Perfection
All of us struggle with perfection. We put on various masks to appear a certain way, based on some arbitrary version of success or what it should look like. In a bid to make a better impression on the world, we alienate ourselves from what we are at the core: simple, truthful, creative, and innocent.
Where This Need Comes From
This need likely stems from survival instincts—a belief that we must hide our vulnerabilities in order to protect ourselves. But most of us are no longer in survival mode, and yet we keep running these old programs in our minds, instead of creating new systems in which we can thrive.
The Mirror of the World
The world is a giant mirror, reflecting our inner narratives. What I’ve realized in the past year is this: when you express with authenticity, you have a far greater impact than you could otherwise. You connect more deeply with others, and life becomes simpler. Directness doesn't make you more callous—it increases your compassion.
Releasing the Fear of Judgment
You stop being concerned with appearances. Instead, you start asking: What can I do in life? How can I give?
So much space is created in your heart when you let go of the unnecessary fluff—when you stop containing your excitement and dimming your light for fear of others’ opinions, envy, or judgment. You begin to see that those fears were just projections of your own doubts. Once you learn to stand up to those inner doubts, you become free of external opinions.
Vulnerability, Interconnection & Purpose
When you start striving to be honest with yourself and others, you begin to drop the illusion that we are separate. Our problems may be different, but a common thread runs through all our experiences. We’re all here for similar things: to find deeper joy, to open our hearts, and to feel connected.
Opening to Life & Gratitude
Yes, this may sound cliché in the face of life’s struggles. But when we open a dialogue about those struggles—about how each of us has overcome them in our own way—we discover the true depth of life. We learn to be open to whatever comes our way, to be grateful. And in that openness, we begin to see the beauty in everything. In that gratitude, we find connection with the divine energy that runs through us all. It’s easy to forget this and fall back into hiding and self-protection.
Final Thoughts
So I hope this video serves as a reminder—for you and especially for myself—to come back to when we find ourselves hiding behind perfection.
